So much of our personal identity is wrapped up in our ability to accomplish in the future, and so much of our identity comes from the places we have been. Last week, I featured the song “What I’ve Overcome” which is about using that past as a platform to transform oneself, and this week, “These Veins” talks about those things that are inside of us that allow us to go things – that which flows through us, our potential. Although inequity exists in so many ways in our world, as long as we are alive, we have that potential.

Although life isn’t as simple as “dream it, do it” we have to start from somewhere. It cane be incredibly difficult to even get to the stage where we dream and hope. Through burnout and inability to cope, so many walls can prevent us even from dreaming. I see “These Veins” as a rally song for dreaming and believing that we can do those things that feel hard. It takes a lot more than hope, but it’s a place to start!

Full Lyrics

Looking around at my city,
Looking around at the light,
Drowning in the glory,
Of mankind.

And there’s a look in your eyes
Says you dream of the cries,
Like the dark dreams of the moon.
There’s a rock in the way,
Says it begs you to stay,
Like my dad threatened to sue.

But these veins carry love.
These veins carry us.
These veins carry the blood,
And the sweat of those who dream.
These veins carry the spirit,
Of all the kids just like me.
To the beat of the heart right,
Down on Broadway,
To the legends up in the hills.
To the kids in the back,
With their hands raised up,
Don’t worry,
They’ll carry you too.
Cause these veins carry us,
Carry me,
They’ll carry you.
These veins carry the secret,
To the dream we came to prove.
These veins,
These veins,
These veins.
These veins,
These veins,
These veins.

Dancing around the heartaches,
Dancing around the shrines,
Saving all my energy,
Buying time.
And there’s a fire in your heart,
Says you’ll tear us apart,
Like the girl with the dragon tattoo.
There’s an ice in your soul,
Says you’re used to the cold,
Like the cold is used to you.

But these veins carry love.
These veins carry us.
These veins carry the deaths,
Of those who lost the fight.
These veins carry the music,
That keeps you up all night.
To the beat of the heart right,
Down on Broadway,
To the legends up in the hills.
To the kids in the back,
With their hands raised up,
Don’t worry,
They’ll carry you too.
Cause these veins carry us,
Carry me,
They’ll carry you.
These veins carry the secret,
To the dream we came to prove.
These veins,
These veins,
These veins.
These veins,
These veins,
These veins.

Oooooh
Oooooh
Oooooh

These veins carry love (these veins, these veins, these veins).
These veins carry us (these veins, these veins, these veins).
